Situated on the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago Ny-Ålesund is the world's most northerly civilian settlement. Inhabited by around 35 to 180 people depending on the time of year, all of them working for research stations. Situated in the Arctic Circle 1231km from the North Pole, the settlement has a rich history of polar exploration.
